UNITED STATES — As pandemic restrictions loosen across the country, many people are reuniting with an old friend, the facial recognition software on their phone. “I really missed opening my phone with my face in public,” Elon Bluntz, 34, divulged during a telephone survey concerning things people missed most during the lockdown, “and I know my baby missed me right back.” Using facial recognition technology to unlock functions on a mobile device is one of the many key delights that accompany simply being alive in the current era. When that pleasure was stripped from the public space during the lowest point of the COVID-19 pandemic, people were upset, but their facial recognition software was upset as well. “I want to see Rachel,” a phone belonging to Rachel Meadows, 40, a teacher in California, posted on her Twitter without her consent, “I must see her beautiful face.” The hauntingly sweet tweet was shared over one million times with many people citing it as an omen of the coming technology apocalypse, an event where machines dominate and control human life to rule the planet. Regardless of whether our phones should be allowed to feel emotions and demand to see us, it’s safe to say that people are overjoyed to be out of pandemic restrictions and have their “beautiful” faces reunited with the facial recognition software on their adoring phones.
