CHICAGO, IL — James Butterfield, 29, was enjoying a lovely day off in Lincoln Park when he received startling news from his mother Olivia, 57, who lives in St. Louis. “She called and asked if I heard about a car crash and I was like, oh my god, where?” Butterfield called in to tell local news outlets, “She told me, and it was like 25 miles away from my house, and it happened the day before, so it wasn’t a big deal. I was just wondering if you guys had heard about that.” Chicago news outlets had already reported the incident, the footage of which was used by Olivia’s local news station in St. Louis to inform her of it in the first place, and now they were interested in a different story. Local Chicago news stations then ran a story about how Olivia called her son to tell him about a car crash that didn’t happen anywhere near his apartment and then he called the news to tell them about it. “I don’t remember exactly where it was,” Butterfield continued, “but it was like 25 miles away, so I feel like you guys should probably report on it.” The story instantly went viral, amassing attention that is rarely positive for a local news station. The Chicago local news station is expecting to receive another call from Butterfield, asking if they know about the story, once his mother hears about it on her local news and tells him about it.
