CHICAGO, IL — Grace Martin, 25, and Derrick Boyd, 30, were delighted when they remembered a stack of Dunkin’ gift cards stashed away in one of their kitchen drawers. “There were five Dunkin’ gift cards in there, so I thought we were rolling in dough,” Martin told press outside of a Dunkin’ in Lakeview where she and her partner Boyd had placed their orders moments earlier, “I got them for my birthday from my coworkers though, so I should have known something was up.” The total price of their combined order was $25, an amount that the couple thought would be easily reached within five gift cards. “I thought each one would have at least like five dollars on it,” Boyd told press, “but they all had these odd amounts on them that were a little less than five dollars. It was like they bought a five-dollar gift card and then used it and then gave it to Grace.” After a confusing shuffle of handing each individual card to the cashier, assuming each time that the total would be reached, the couple soon found out that they owed $10 of their own money for the food and coffees. “We wouldn’t have come here if we knew we were going to have to pay,” Martin continued, “Neither of us really like this place. I mean I already feel sick after eating my breakfast sandwich.” Martin is planning to thank her coworkers for the gift cards on Monday and not mention anything else about them.
